Oyibode Tasks Clergy On Dignity of Labour, Warns Against ‘Instant Wealth’ Messages
The Executive Chairman of Udu Local Government Council, Olorogun(Hon.) Vincent Ogheneruemu Oyibode, JP, FCIA, has called on church leaders to focus their teachings on the dignity of labour and moral uprightness, rather than promoting “get-rich-quick” messages.
The Udu council boss, Oyibode made this appeal when a delegation of Reverends from the Anglican Communion led by Rev. Michael Ikolo, paid him a visit. The clerics were sent by the Most Rev. Cyril O. Odutemu, PhD, JP, Archbishop of Bendel Province and Bishop of Ughelli Diocese to formally invite the council chairman to the forthcoming Bishop’s Charge of the 2nd Session of the 10th Synod.
During the meeting, the Udu council boss expressed concern over the growing trend of moral decadence in society which he attributed partly to misleading messages from some religious quarters. He urged church leaders to use their platforms to instill values of hard work, integrity, and accountability among their congregations.
Oyibode specifically cautioned against the practice of celebrating or endorsing wealth acquired through questionable means. He advised clergymen to refrain from dedicating expensive vehicles and other luxury items belonging to individuals whose sources of income cannot be justified.
He also frowned at sermons that emphasize “miracle alerts” and instant wealth, noting that such teachings could mislead the youth and encourage unethical behavior.
According to him, religious institutions play a critical role in shaping societal values and must therefore rise to the responsibility of correcting societal ills through sound moral teachings.
In their response, the visiting clerics appreciated the chairman for his candid counsel and reaffirmed the commitment of the Church to promoting righteousness and positive values in society.
The visit also served as an avenue to formally invite Oyibode to the upcoming synod, a significant event in the Anglican Communion calendar.
